摘要:本計畫欲以貝克特(Samuel Beckett)的文學為研究文本,旨在勾勒與提呈其文學所能觀照之社會政治考量,以反映當代面對全球人文危機的重要性或反思。計畫分為兩大階段;首先,將從政治美學理論的角度思辨貝克特二戰後的文學作品,並搭建政治美學論述與貝克特劇作中的失調(discordance)、失語(aporia)兩大主題之橋梁。透過文本探討,提呈其政治社會性所應採取的批判姿態、解放意識,以否定社會壓抑;因此,本研究會先根據阿多諾(Theodor W. Adorno)、哈伯瑪斯(Jurgen Habermas)、馬庫色(Herbert Marcuse)、班雅明(Walter Benjamin)、盧卡奇(Georg Lukacs)等諸位德國理論學家的歐洲政治美學論述,重新分析與彰顯貝克特作品中的失調與失語主題。再者,本研究將接續該類政治美學論述所提呈的視角及其提點的社會特性,並依循此論述依據,透過以阿岡本(Giorgio Agamben)為基礎的理論框架,鑽研裸命(bare life)與例外狀態(state of exception)的現象如何襯托前一研究階段所探討的主題,以期貢獻出貝克特文學的政治社會論述─相對顯少被重視的討論─的關聯性,以及探討其實質內涵,是否能反映現實的政治社會現狀。研究期望能透過人物之為裸命之自然體,與外在環境之政治體所必然產生的例外狀態,解讀貝克特式題材同樣存有的無法界定之閾(threshold),並將此理解與認知,作為面對當前全世界所遭遇的政治社會層面的諸多問題的借鏡。 This one-year research considers the social-political spectrum of Samuel Beckett’s post-WWII work, in order to rethink its significance in its wake, and to provide a source of reflection on the global humanitarian crisis. The project is divided into two stages. First, I will make textual studies to focus on the thematic issues of discordance and aporia based on Beckett’s work, and to contrive intertextualities with the politics of aesthetics, to introduce the core issue of this research on social-political connections. Drawing from the works of Theodor W. Adorno, Jurgen Habermas, Herbert Marcuse, Walter Benjamin and Georg Lukacs, I will generate key principles based on the politics of aesthetics, and to study how they lend themselves to the thematic inquiries of discordance and aporia in the texts. Second, I shall extend the discussion from the first stage by invoking Giogio Agamben’s work as the central theoretical framework, to investigate how his conceptual notions of “bare life” and the “state of exception” make their applications in Beckett’s work-a marriage of the much neglected political rigor, and an approach that has not yet been delved into in Beckett studies. The research, therefore, hopes to discover that the level of reality implied in Beckettian ambiguity, may juxtapose Agamben’s proposition of the undetermined threshold; so as to propose the underlying social-political undertone Beckett’s works provide.
